First ovulation and first menstruation (first menstrual period)

Around 2 weeks after her first ovulation, a girl gets her menstrual period for the first time. If she has sexual intercourse (without using contraception) during this time, she can get pregnant. Even when she has sex for the first time (her “first time”).

When can fertilisation happen?

Around once a month, an egg cell ripens in the woman’s ovary and is picked up by one of the two Fallopian tubes. For the following 24 hours, the egg cell can be fertilised by a man’s sperm cells (sperm). However, because the sperm cells can survive in the woman’s body for up to 5 days, the woman can get pregnant if she has unprotected sex a few days before ovulation.

Getting pregnant before your first menstrual period?

No-one can predict exactly when a girl will ovulate for the first time. Her first menstrual period merely shows that she ovulated for the first time about 2 weeks before. This means that she can get pregnant 2 weeks before her first period.

Boys: fertile from their first ejaculation

Boys produce sperm cells (sperm) for the first time during puberty. When a boy ejaculates for the first time, he is fertile. Even when he has sexual intercourse for the first time, if he does not use contraception he can father a child.

No desire to have children

If you do not wish to have children, it is important to use contraception even the first time you have sex.
