Infection of the urethra (men), vagina (women) or rectum (men and women). The most common symptom of gonorrhoea is a yellowish green discharge from the penis or the vagina. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria. A condom protects against gonorrhoea. The doctor can check whether you have gonorrhoea by taking a swab from the vagina, urethra, penis or rectum. As rectal gonorrhoea often has no symptoms, a swab from the rectum after anal sex can also be sensible if no symptoms are present. Gonorrhoea can be cured with antibiotics.
